Hi, my name is Marcelo, we are running IDS 7.3 over SCO OpenServer 5.0.5. We need in one of our applications to lock a table at row level, but by default is set in page mode. The question is: - The DBA can update the systable for that table in column locklevel setting it with value "R". If it is like this, what else do I have to do to take effect this change in the table ? - The programmers must do anything in the 4gl source file ? Thank you for your response.

You can change the lock mode of a table with= ALTER TABLE ... = >- The programmers must do anything in the 4gl source file ? = No. But - you might need much more locks now when changing larger parts of the ta= ble! Onconfig parameter! - row level locking because of parallel requests? you may need fitting in= dices as well (if you do sequential scans theres no big difference in row or pageleve= l locking) = Regards, Andreas Kutsche = ------------------------------------------------ SPAR Oesterreichische Warenhandels-AG Hauptzentrale Europastra=DFe 3 A-5015 Salzburg = Telefon : +43 662 4470 24423 E-Mail : Andreas.KUTSCHE@spar.at Internet: http://www.spar.at ------------------------------------------------ = ----LNX_Thu_Sep_18_2003_14:25:03_V3.33----
Hi Marcello, Do not update the systables table yourself. This will cause an inconsistency. What you should do is give the 'alter table <tablename> lock mode (row)'command. This will update the systemcatalog in a nice manner. After this you don't have to change your application at all. The lock granularity only has become smaller so there shouldn't be any problem. The only thing your DBA should check if there are enough locks defined (parameter LOCKS in onconfig). Because the lock granularity is smaller there can be a situation where more locks are needed. Just to be sure. If it is like this, what else do I have to do to take effect this change in the table ? I hope you mean, the DBA can run ALTER TABLE for each table to change the locklevel value in systables??? <gulp> They shouldn't be running UPDATEs on the systables table, or any other sys tables. That's all there is to do, except you may find you run out of locks, depending on how many are configured in your onconfig file. > - The programmers must do anything in the 4gl source file ?
