How tu use a table on another Instance
Posted in 2013
A user with an HDR pair (servers x/y) wanted to read a table living on a third, separate IDS instance (z) from server y. The answer: use a distributed query with fully qualified naming, e.g. select ... from database@instance_z:table, provided instance_z is listed in y's sqlhosts and trust is set up (hosts.equiv/.rhosts); test connectivity first with dbaccess database@instance_z. A server alias on z was also suggested. A side discussion noted that distributed queries are licence-prohibited on Growth/Workgroup/Innovator/Express editions (per IBM licence documents, with ER replication as a workaround), but the poster had the Ultimate edition, so the straightforward distributed query applied.

Hi, I have my instance (11.50) "x" replicated with hdr "y", i made a third ids server "z" that contains a table which i want to acces from the "y" server, so what are the steps to do so, please ? thanks in advance
Hi,
you should be able to query the table using the syntax
select field1, field2 ... from database@instance_z:table ...If the instance_z is in your sqlhosts of instance y and z trusts y
(hosts.equiv or .rhosts e.g).
Direct access can be tested with dbaccess (dbaccess database@instance_z should
work directly
from y machine).

The only caviat is that only enterprise edition supports distributed
queries!
The alternative, if you are using Growth/Workgroup Edition, Innovator
Edition, or Express Edition, would be to use ER to replicate the table to
the HDR pair.

Hmmm you sure are about that
On my workgroup 11.70
Select *
From oninit@theoden:users a, oninit@gimli:users b, custdb@custsite:users c
Where a.uid = b.uid
And a.uid = c.uid
Works happenly
Cheers

Aren't we confusing distributed queries and distributed/grid queries - the
later would need the ultimate/enterprise/whatever it is call this week version
AFAIK Marketing didn't like grid queries and called them distributed queries -
some thing that has always been there - nothing like presenting a clear image
:-)

It gives you the list of prohibited components.
There are other links for the rest of the Informix products. These links
are the official "IBM License Information Documents" that you can go by.
It is true that distributed queries are prohibited on a GROWTH/WORKGROUP
Edition. Which is really too bad, but !!!!

Suspect they are many, if not all none enterprise/ultimate/whatever
installations, are in breach of the license then.
The simple
Select * from prod where value not in (select * from uat) ;
Insert into test select broken_date from prod;
etc
are no longer allowed.
Cheers
Paul

Can I clarify what excluding the following from 12.10 Workgroup Edition means
"Storage Optimization Feature (Compression)"?
Excluding compression I can understand but asking IBMers implies this excludes
running online reorgs as well.
Even the express edition of MS SQL Server 2012 which only allows 1GB of memory
does not mention excluding online reorgs....response IBM?
