Encryption/compression of backups
Answered: amber (solid confidence) — John Miller III (IBM) and Art Kagel give consistent, specific answers: the storage manager (not onbar itself) does compression, and ontape/onbar can use BACKUP_FILTER/RESTORE_FILTER for compression or encryption; never explicitly confirmed by the original asker.

The poster asked whether ON-Bar is the only Informix tool that can compress or encrypt backups, and whether the bundled ISM supports it. Replies clarified that ON-Bar itself doesn't compress/encrypt — the storage manager does (ISM does compress), and that newer versions let ontape use the BACKUP_FILTER and RESTORE_FILTER ONCONFIG parameters with user-supplied filter programs for compression/encryption. Backing up to STDIO and piping through an external program was also suggested. Art Kagel pointed to the Administrator's Reference and Backup and Restore manuals for details.

Is onbar the only informix tool that will do compression and/or encryption of
the data being backed up? Can onbar do that with the basic ISM, or do you have
to purchase a storage manager from another vendor (Legato, Tivoli, etc.)? What
type of encryption does the base ISM use?
Technically speaking onbar does not compress or encrypt data, but the
storage manager does.
yes ism will compress data, I forget what type of compression.
You can use the feature backup filters to do compress/encryption with
ontape also, but you
must supply your own filters.

Depends on version. Newer versions ontape can use the RESTORE_FILTER and
BACKUP_FILTER to encrypt/decrypt or compress/decompress the archives also.

Also when directed to STDIO, you can pipe the input/output stream through
anything, including an encrpytion program.

Can you provide more details about the backup filters and ontape? A pointer to
the relevant docs or white papers (Redbooks?) would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Look at the descriptions of the BACKUP_FILTER and RESTORE_FILTER ONCONFIG
parameters in the Administrator's Reference manual and also read up about
using the filters in the Backup and Restore manual.
