Caveat emptor. I did eventually get a response from Informix Tech Support which cleared up the problem on the third system. I was advised to run a program called "regcopy" to copy the Informix environment settings in the Registry from the default user to the current user. It worked. I believe that the problem may have been caused by a quirk of which user ID was used to install the software and which to run it, though I never received confirmation of that. This procedure was not documented in the CLI Installation Guide. Informix Tech Support claims that there is documentation for this in a book called the Client Products Installation and Configuration Guide for Microsoft Windows Environments, but nobody I've talked to here has ever seen that book. It doesn't seem to be something that Informix normally ships along with CLI.
