Difference between 32bit Informix and 64bit Inform
Posted in 2008
A user running 13 Informix 7.31 (32-bit) instances on HP-UX 11.11 hit shared memory errors when starting a 14th instance and asked whether moving to a 64-bit build would help. Replies explained the main difference is addressable memory (roughly 1.5–4 GB per 32-bit instance, depending on OS/architecture, vs. up to ~4 TB for 64-bit), plus native 64-bit arithmetic. Consensus: 64-bit only helps if the server actually has free physical RAM; if the box is out of memory, more RAM is needed, and consolidating databases into fewer instances or checking OS SHMMAX/SHMMNI/SHMALL settings was suggested. The poster never described the exact error and no confirmed outcome is recorded.

We have one HP Unix server 11.11 and running 13 instances of Informix version 7.31HD10(32 bit). When we try to start 14 instances, we are getting Shared memory problems. We can not reduce shared memory size of other instances for performance purpose. If we upgrade Informix 7.31FD6 (64 bit) version, is it help us?? Thanks Jayanta

Yes, Jayanta, please pardon all my sarcastic collegues. That is precisely why you would want to upgrade to 64 bit, although going forward with 11.5 you will no longer be given a 32 bit option (or perhaps it will at least no longer be the default). As a DBA you want to have all your environments on 64 bit so that you can make use of much more memory for your buffers as well as allowing other enhancements. With 32 bit the maximum memory you can allocate for all your instances combined is 1.75 Gig and even that requires all the allocations to be at start to up to ensure you can grab this maximum value. This is Much, much greater with 64 bit though I do not know the exact number off the top of my head. I'm sure OTC or Paul would know that figure. Thanks! I agree with Bob, you are running our of memory on the server. The 64bit version won't help if you don't add more memory to the server. Is there a specific reason you need to run 14 instances instead of 1 instance with multiple databases? This is simple to check. If you see plenty of memory on the box just verify
the footprint of all the informix instances by doing an onstat - of each
instance, and summing up the Kbytes used. If the total of all the
environments is close to 1,800,000 Kbytes you need 64 bit.
Example output:
>onstat -
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.10.FC2W2 -- On-Line -- Up 62 days
12:10:15 -- 927096 Kbytes

Actually the limit on IDS 32bits is around 3.75GB "per instance". If you have
enough physical memory and still shared memory problems I'd look to SHMxxx
parameters at OS level. Most likely you are hitting some OS limitation.
There is a lot of guessing on all of these answers because you did not explain
what kind of "shared memory problems" you are experiencing.

Basically the difference between a 32-bit build and a 64-bit build is addressability space. 32-bit pointers will have a 4 GIG limit in the s= ize of memory that can be addressed. 64-bit builds have an addressability limit of 4 TBytes. Also with a 32-bit build 64-bit math is done by using simulation. Wit= h a 64-bit build it is done by machine operations. (Even a long long is re= ally a simulation using two 32-bit integers. It's just that the simulation = is performed by the compiler. ------------------------------------- Madison Pruet, STSM IDS Replication Architect = "JAYANTA SARKAR" = <jayanta.js@gmail = .com> = To Sent by: ids@iiug.org = ids-bounces@iiug. = cc org = Subj= ect Difference between 32bit Informi= x 12/18/2008 11:54 and 64bit Inform [14361] = AM = = = Please respond to = ids@iiug.org = = = What are the difference between 32bit Informix and 64bit Informix versi= on? ***********************************************************************= ******** Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. =
Don't know what OS you are using but on Solaris, LINUX, and AIX we have been
able to configure near 3.75 GB., at least since 9.4 when I started having this

Mainly that 64bit IDS can use more memory, uses 64bit values and instructions internally which is sometimes faster and more efficient, and because of the added memory available a small number of ONCONFIG parameters have expanded value ranges in the 64bit releases. Almost Kate. Each 32bit instance can access up to from 1.5 to 4GB of memory (more or less depending on the specific OS and CPU architecture and sizes of the shared libraries it must load at runtime. Each 64bit instance can access up to about 4TB of memory (again depending on the architecture). However, as pointed out, if the users is running out of memory altogether a bigger address space will not help. Now, having said that, combining all 14 servers' databases into a single instance (or smaller number of instances) will free up much redundant memory and that MAY also require that they upgrade to a 64bit IDS release. However, again, if there is a physical memory restraint, also as already pointed out, they will have to add more memory to take best advantage of the engine. AFAIK it's always been that way.

Why ? Because - and I admit I only infered this form your detailed problem and error description - that the 14th instance fails as there is no more physical and or virtual memory available on the UNIX server. If this is the case I suggest you buy more physical memory for the server. Also you might want to check swapping or paging activity of the sevrer. If there is a lot, your performance might benefit from more physical RAM. However, as I said - this is mere speculation based on your above problem description. HTH Tilman

Its probably less on other UNIX flavours, depending on how memroy is reserved for kernel and shared libs. On AIX 2.75GB is maximum (with usage of EXTSHM environment variable) for any 32 bit process. (11 segments a 256 MB ) Don't recall the details for 32 bit processes on HP-UX but I think it was less than 3.75 GB. Rgds Tilman
