Error -4518: Cannot allocate any more space

Can someone please help me with error -4518: "The 4GL program cannot allocate any more space for temporary string storage." I sometimes get this error in reports. The problem is that the program just aborts without saying in which module or on which line. The debugger also is not of much help: it showed the place where the program dumped, but after simplifying the code at that place it still kept aborting. I just don't know where to look, the more because the "corrective action" the manual proposes is not at all that clear: "this error can occur if the nested functions in a CALL statement return strings whose total length exceeds 512 characters". But I don't have any function with strings or parameters that long. What do they exactly mean with "nested functions" and "total length" ?? And I don't get this error if I do not select too much data for the report !
