Error Messages on Redhat6.2 for informix

Hi All, OS RedHat Linux 6.2 Informix 7.31UC10. I am getting an error message when I try to initialise an instance i.e oninit -is. The following error message is shown and it just hangs. is the INFORMIXDIR environment variable set?
