Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
I though IDS 7ontape does
- open tape
- read header
- close tape (expecting rewind)
- open tape
- reread header
The reread will fail if you use a no-rewind device certainly for
restore.
The manual says
- ontape rewind devices
- onbar norewind devices
I always follow the manual.

That's on restore, yes. But at logical log back up time, it only opens the
device once which is why ontape -c or ontape -a will work fine with disk
files or norewind devices. Then only downside is that you have to remember
to manually rewind the tape cartridge before attempting to restore.
For all other ontape modes REWIND devices are definitely required.
