"We will take a significant lead on Oracle in 1997 and 1998 and potentially be the largest software database company in the world," said White. Informix's Universal Server arrives several months ahead of Oracle's Oracle8 and according to Dan Kusnetzky, an analyst with International Data Corp., Informix's Universal Server could become the database of the future. Michelle Kildunne, director of fixed income trading technology at CS First Boston, notes that DataBlade technology eliminated eight weeks of work that would have been required to tie a database to a text search engine and Web interface builder. CS First Boston Corp. plans to migrate to INFORMIX-Universal Server in January. Sabre Decision Technologies currently uses Oracle as its decision-support database, but Informix has the inside track for an expanded and object-oriented data warehouse that will be built next year. INFORMIX-Universal Server is the weapon Informix hopes will topple Oracle from its lead position in the database software business. Jim Pickrel, senior analyst at Hambrecht & Quist, called INFORMIX-Universal Server an exciting technology that will consolidate Informix's number two position, but not "slay the Oracle dragon."
