User reported performance degradation in .NET application after deploying RSS (read-only secondary) replication for reporting. Disabling RSS with 'onmode -s standard' resolved the issue. Responders confirmed RSS can impact primary performance through flow control and backlog throttling, and suggested checking flow control settings, network problems, DELAY_APPLY parameter, LOG_INDEX_BUILDS, and TEMPTAB_NOLOG configuration to diagnose and…

Hi, I have an informix Primary 11.7 database in Windows 2008 R2, I have monted
an Rss server read only) fro reporting, it works perfect for 3 days, bu since
19 August the users complain a performance issus with the .net in house
software, when I have checked IIS(Internet Information server) I have found
that there is a hangs in IIs trying to execute many aspx pages, I restard IIS
and again the performance problem is here, in the server of database in
primary and seconday the resource (CPU and RAM) are very low so I did not know
why there is this performance problem, after that I have tape 'onmode -s
standard' on the RSS server and the performance problem has gone, so the
question is "Is the RSS server impact performance even if it just executes the
logs) and how can we avoid this issus and letting the replication to be done,
this RSS is just for reporting and some user requests, I want to separate the
transaction (OLTP) from the huge select of somes users or reports.
thanks to help plz

RSS can definitely impact your primary performance. Flow control can kick
in if the backlog gets too big, and start throttling the primary server.
Keep an eye on the backlog and the RSS status to make sure that it is active
and not blocked. You can increase the RSS_FLOW_CONTROL values or disable
flow control by setting to -1, as long as you understand that if the backlog
becomes too huge you may need to restore the secondary in order to restart
replication.
Are you possibly having network problems between the servers?

The rss_flow control is disabled and the backlog is 0 from onstat -g rss
verbose, is there any way to diagnose thats the problem is coming from the rss
even if when I disconnect the rss server evrything is normal now, and my IIS
is working perfect no more pages are quued in IIS process worker
If RSS_FLOW_CONTROL is definitely set to "-1" and not "0" then I'd look at
DELAY_APPLY. Setting a non-zero value, even 1s or 2s, further decouples the
RSS from the primary. You can change DELAY_APPLY dynamically.
You might need to start looking at the wait states in "onstat -u" to see what
your problem is.
Ben.
Hello.
Please take a look at your LOG_INDEX_BUILDS and TEMPTAB_NOLOG parameters, to
make sure they are following the recommendations.
Regards.
