Informix for WIn98?

Help! I have a friend who has an ancient 486 running Xenix 386. His database is Informix SQL 2.10. He has moved/migrated most of his apps off of this system onto his 4 user Win98 peering network using Access and VB. He is unable to find a suitable app to move his last app off this ancient beast. It's written in native Informix (Informix screens, ACE reports, etc - no outside software used). I thought it would be easy for him if he could find Informix for Win98 (1 user at that!) that would read in his files, recompile and poof, he's up and running. Is such a thing possible? I'm betting no, that he'll have to get the database converted to another format (access, foxpro, Dbase, etc) and have someone write a new front end for it (a la VB). Thanks a bunch, Shawn

Yes you can get Informix versions for Windows, many people run Informix on NT servers (have a look at this URL <http://www.informix.com/informix/techbriefs/idspe/idspe.htm>). However, your pal should seriously consider a Linux box, and the (relatively cheap) Linux version of Informix. If he/she's been running Xenix for years, running Linux should be no challenge, and there's plenty of information floating around the web on how to set it up. Migrating the data should be possible, and normally you'd be able to search out some advice on this from deja.com (old posts are offline at the moment, but do a power search on posts by Jonathan Leffler, and some relevant keywords as soon as deja is fully back on line). Version 2.10 is VERY ancient, but it's not a completely lost cause by any means. -- Andrew Pearson "exactly what the web needs less of".
The choice way in the past would be IDS-PE 7.2x. But it in the 4th category & I guess it absent in price list. Now "personal" is only Cloudscape Personal Edition 2.x, 3.x. But it requires JDBC. http://www.informix.com/cloudscape/. So, really I think you should get Linux if you want stay with Informix in this configuration. "Shawn L. I did some poking around and IDS-PE looks like one potential way to go (but I am unable to find an evaluation copy - I haven't tried calling Informix yet, but it looks like it's on their "old software" list). The other is to use Linux. I'll pass both options on to him. Thanks again! Shawn
Hi, Yes PE is in Cat 4 (soon to be no longer supported). The best Informix based approach for your friend would be to either use Cloudscape or move to IDS or SE on Linux (or for that matter NT, and IDS is way overkill for the app you have described). If you use Cloudscape then your friend would have to be prepared to re-write the application in Java since Cloudscape requires JDBC and Java to operate. Java itself is going to be slow on a 486, so if you go that route you would be best to upgrade the machine (to a pIII or some such beast). HTH ben.
