Re: priority question

I thought some more about what I said yesterday, and I think I need to make
some corrections to that.
The pid that you get from onstat -g ses sessid corresponds to the front end
process (or client) that connected to the oninit listener (server). When
you start up the instance, it spawns one or more listeners that listen on
the ports specified in /etc/services for your servicenames specified in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts. The session ids correspond to the threads within
the oninit listener process. The pid corresponds to the Unix client that
connects to the listener process, such as dbaccess or some other 4gl or
ESQL/C program.
So to answer your question, if we increase the priority of the front end
process it will pass requests faster to the listener, which depending on
how heavily the listener was loaded, may or may not cause it to process the
requests and return responses faster.

Dianne
I am only guessing here, since I never had to do this sort of thing, but
the Unix pid corresponding to the session id can be found from onstat -g
ses <session_id> where session_id = 52697 in your example. On some Unix
systems priority can be increased by root by decreasing the nice-ness of
the process. Other (non-root) users can only increase the nice-ness of the
processes they own, thereby decreasing the priority.
However if I understand correctly, a session runs in a thread, a group of
which (threads and therefore sessions) correspond to a single Unix process
(and therefore a pid). Thus decreasing the nice-ness of the pid
corresponding to session id = 52697 will raise the priority of all threads
that are running in the process.
I may be wrong on this however so I would welcome comments and corrections
from more knowledgable members of this group.
Thanks
Sujit

Subject: priority question
Hi everyone. Can the priority be raised on a particular session?
For instance, if I have this onstat -u:
INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.23.UC1 -- On-Line -- Up 57 days 00:27:52 --
224688 K
bytes
Userthreads
address flags sessid user tty wait tout locks nreads

d0673918 Y--P--- 53406 diannep - d0884a00 0 1 0 0
9 active, 128 total, 45 maximum concurrent
Can I raise the priority on session 52697, the one with user cscadapt?
HP-UX 10.20. Online 7.23.UC1.
Thanks, Dianne
