About ontape yet
Posted in 2009
The poster asked how to verify that an ontape backup is valid and actually usable for recovery. Replies pointed him to the archecker utility, whose main purpose is to validate archives from either ontape or ON-Bar, with a link to the IDS v10 documentation. Another contributor offered a quick-and-dirty alternative: dump the start of the tape/file with dd (using the TAPEBLK block size) and inspect it with od. The poster later noted he was on IDS 9.40 under Windows Server 2003, and it was left uncertain whether archecker exists in that version; no confirmed outcome is recorded.

Hi all,
Any one know how can I check if an ontape backup has the right information?
I mean, how can I ensure that, in case of an accidente, I will be able to
use my ontape tapes to recover?
Best Regards,
Pedro Ivo

Look into the archecker program. It's main function is to verify an archive
whether ontape or onbar.

Another quick-and-dirty;you need to know the TAPEBLK size.
Assumptions;
- archive to tape /dev/st0 (or a file)
- TAPEBLK is 256
dd if=/dev/st0 of=/tmp/tapestart bs=256k count=4
od -c /tmp/tapestart | more
You're dumping the beginning of the tape (or file) to a file in /tmp, then
viewing it with 'od'. Might need to be root to do it.
