creating unique random id

Can someone give me a hint or a suggestion on how to create a random generated alphanumeric id for one of the column in a table (char 16). His a tricky part: this table is a part of the enterprise replication with two servers involved (update anywhere). One of the servers is the "live" server, another one is a backup, and brought to "live" via weblogic in case if the first one is down. Any help is greatly appreciated, Sincerely, Elena V.
