OT - Windows update virus
Posted in 2003
Off-topic thread: a poster reported receiving 64 copies in one day of a fake "Windows Update" virus email and wondered whether his address had been harvested from this newsgroup. Many regulars confirmed the same flood, plus matching bogus "mail returned to recipient" bounces carrying a ~142KB .pif attachment (the Swen/Gibe worm). The only advice offered was to post using a throw-away email address rather than a main one, and a wish that ISPs would filter such messages; no other resolution is recorded.

Hi, I've received this little gem 64 times today. I'm mildly curoius as to where they got my email from, and this is one of the few places I've posted to. Anyone else getting spammed by the little horror? -- Scott Burns Mirrabooka Systems Tel +61 7 3857 7899 Fax +61 7 3857 1368

Anyone else getting spammed by the little horror? All the accounts I use to post are spammed constantly. Fortunately my old work account has changed due to a change in domain, and I'm going to shutdown that mailbox in a week or two. Now, I post with a throw-away address that can absorb the spam. Don't use your main e-mail address!
I'm getting bombed as well. Gorazd

Anyone else getting spammed by the little horror? Yes, I got 60+ copies of it - so far. And there are two new ones in my junk folder now... I wish ISPs would filter pure viruses like this long before it got near my inbox. I'm also getting one bounce message per copy of the virus - miscellaneous domains, including MS and HotMail. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/

Same-same on the nonsensical Mail Returned to Recipients, as well as the Windows Update Virus.
