Informix on Solaris 11
Posted in 2013
A DBA migrating IDS 11.70.FC7W2 from Solaris 10 to Solaris 11 found the engine would only boot with RESIDENT set to 0 or 1; with RESIDENT -1 (lock all shared memory resident) it panicked at startup with assertion failures in mtex.c line 490, "Exception Caught. Type: MT_EX_OS, Context: mem", in kaio/tlitcppoll threads. Art Kagel saw nothing diagnostic in the log and suggested a PMR (already opened); David Williams asked for the af files, onconfig, oninit -v output and host memory, suspecting overcommitted memory, and another poster suggested checking kernel settings in the release notes. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi,
We are migrating our Informix 11.70.FC7W2 from Solaris 10 to Solaris 11.
We are having an issue if we set RESIDENT to -1 we cannot bring up the
engine as it keeps crashing. If we set it to 0 or 1 the engine comes up
ok. Anyone have any ideas on this? historically we have always set
RESIDENT to -1.

Is there any notice in the online log at the time of the crash? If so, can
you post it here?

Hmm, nothing useful though. Time to open a PMR with IBM Support.

Already opened a PMR yesterday. Nothing came up yet so I figured time to
email the group to see if anyone is running 11.70 on Solaris 11 and also
ran into this issue.

No, not time to open a PMR, time to send me the contents of the af files.
Try again, send the onconfig file and af file, and spec of the host machine
including memory size.
Also try starting the server with oninit -v and send the output.
You probably have overcommited memory on the host.

Checking the kernel settings couldn't hurt. Hmm, just remembered a similar situation: It could be that the kernel setting for the maximum resident memory may be set too low to allow the virtual segment to become resident. The engine usually detects that error and just reallocates the virtual segment without residency, but that could trigger a bug causing a crash. Art Art S. Hello. I just saw the machine notes for solaris 64, and there are several recommendations for projects allocated memory, a feature that solaris 10 does not had, including numbers of simultaneous sessions through tli network protocol. That should also be your case. Check that all are fine, since you´re in the latest release + fix packs, I don´t think you might be hitting some bug. 11.70 is already GE a long time ago, and is very stable in release 7. Regards. Are you using containers? I seem to remember something like this at a customer site, but it wasn't Solaris 11 as such, but a change within Solaris to how memory is allocated to containers via "projects". Ping me on Monday if still not fixed and I'll ask my colleague who fixed it. Neil
What does the output from: prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project default show?
Neil, Thank you. prctl is: prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project default project: 3: default NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT project.max-shm-memory privileged 128GB - deny - system 16.0EB max deny - --Dave On Tue, Nov 5, 2013 at 6:04 PM, NEIL TRUBY <neil.truby@ardenta.com> wrote: > What does the output from: > > prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project default > > show? > > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > > --089e011770dbaf368a04ea880653
