Try (approximately):
SELECT syscolumns.colsize FROM syscolumns, systables
WHERE syscolumns.tabid = systables.tabid
AND systables.tabname = "YOURTABLE"
AND syscolumns.colname = "YOURCOLUMN"
"colsize" might be "collength" or something similar.
