In article <3lskfq$6bv@newsbf02.news.aol.com>, billkuruc@aol.com says... > >I understand they have unbundled the $495 runtime into pieces... >Basically, you can run new era for $150 ...you can optionally add >ODBC drivers....$100 >Viewpoint Pro ...$150 >i think there is 1 other piece ....i forget what it is >something like this.....so you can pick the pieces you need only !!! I can pass the runtime cost on to my customer, who should probably be very happy with the wonderful new app I created with New Era. They'll be paying very little compared to what I have to pay just to get in the ballgame. This is wonderful thinking when it's only ONE SEAT. I don't think even the Fortune 100 are going to be so smug when they discover how many apps they're REALLY going to have to pay for. And we haven't even seen the cost of paying for the programming that went into the app. No runtime fees would be the best solution. And a lower cost of the application software as well. This whole runtime thing gets back to INFORMIX marketing folk who can't see the new market emerging. People love the choices now available to them. And we can thank UNIX for it. Bill Gates wrapped up the best of UNIX in Win NT 3.5, which can still use some polish, but it really is the beginning of the end of the old way of thinking. You know, back in the '70's the photography industry when through a similar change. Professional photographers had increasingly more competition from non-professional photographers because there was an explosion of access to good quality equipment at a lower cost. It changed the whole market. Maybe INFORMIX is trying to keep their products away from the masses, by charging prices only large companies can pay. It will backfire on them, as people go for the highly accessable, clearly defined, low-cost solution. -- \\\\|// (o o) ==============================---o00--(_)--00o---=========================== = Tim Schaefer tschaefe@gate.net The Computer Business Company, Inc. http://www.gate.net/~tschaefe Coconut Creek, FL, USA INX_UTIL Tool Kit is now shareware Ub...eh...Now, see, who gets to ask the questions here? --Ross Perot ============================================================================ =
