I have run some highly unscientific tests of speed of backup for level 1, level 2, and level 0 backups. I didn't find much difference in speed. My strategy is to do daily level-0 backups to a large, compressed DAT tape drive. During this time, logging is handled by having a maximum number of logfiles at about 5 megabytes apiece. They can handle the logging load while the tape drive is busy. BTW, we've found that our archive process goes a **lot** faster when backing up to the compressed device, rather than the uncompressed tape device.
