Well, going forward from 7.14 to 7.23, sysmaster is rewritten in its
entirety, and you get a sysutils database as well. It also sets things
up for in-place alter and various other bits of new functionality
introduced in 7.2x.
If you have to fall back to 7.14, but want to preserve your own data,
issue the command
onmode -b 7.1UD1
This will revert all disk structures back to what 7.14 expects. You can
then launch your 7.14 instance without difficulty. If you don't do this,
the server will probably get hopelessly lost during initialisation.
The next time you launch 7.23, it will update all of the structures
again.
All this is covered in the Migration Guide. It's dry reading, but it
walks you through all that you need to do to move from one version to
another.
