Write Logical Logs To Disk

Hi, Greetings, The situation: I am trying to write the logical logs on the first instance to the disk instead of the tape so that I may transfer these to the second instance and use recovery to bring it upto date. I am trying this to implement production backup at the database level. The problem: IDS will not write to a disk. I tried by creating a pipe and writing to it, but that failed too. If there any way I can write my logical logs to the disk instead of the tape ? Thanking you. Regards Gagan
You can use ISM (Informix Storage Manager -- which is a stripped down
version of Legato). It comes free with IDS. It works nicely to send the
logs to a disk filesystem. I used this in conjuction with EMC BCV's to
perform an external restore with onbar, and applied the logs from there.

Hi,
Greetings,
The situation:
I am trying to write the logical logs on the first instance to the disk
instead of the tape so that I may transfer these to the second instance and
use recovery to bring it upto date. I am trying this to implement
production backup at the database level.
The problem:
IDS will not write to a disk. I tried by creating a pipe and writing to it,
but that failed too.
If there any way I can write my logical logs to the disk instead of the
tape ?
Thanking you.

Hi,
how are you backing up the logical logs ?
Are you using ontape or ON-Bar ?
Assuming you're using ontape :
- specify the absolute file path name in your $ONCONFIG file
with parameter LTAPEDEV,
- make sure you've done as Scott wrote (see below),
- if you've a running "ontape -c" you need to stop it and
restart it, so that it picks up the new value from your $ONCONFIG.
- be sure you "save" the file before hitting 'RETURN" when
ontape asks for a new tape ...
With ON-Bar it's a bit more complicated. Thus explanation
can only given upon request. :)
Regards,
Martin

hi there
remember "ontape -c" is interactive, so you should script something like this:
(unix-only)
###
ontape -c <<EOF 1>/tmp/ontape.log 2>&1 &
<-------- empty line !!!EOF
cat /foo/bar/fifo | gzip -c > logicallog.dat #### save lots of disk space
###
And, as Scott O'roruke wrote, fifo must be 660, informix.informix
hope it helps
