RE: Looking for Expert Opinion regarding Informix SE 7.x history and its future, if any
Posted in 2010
A follow-up thread to a question about the history and future prospects of Informix SE 7.x. Most of it is banter and reminiscence rather than technical content: one poster corrects the idea that SE's Linux port 'failed' (SE 7.24.UC5 shipped on Linux in July 1998; only the announcement got scooped by Oracle), followed by complaints about IBM management, a side argument over whether 'update statistics' does anything useful on SE, and the original poster objecting that the replies weren't impartial. The only substantive answer offered is that IBM states it continues to support and sell SE, and that users should judge migration effort to IDS or another DBMS themselves. No real resolution is recorded.

The only thing that 'failed' was Informix's ability to keep it a secret and let their announcement get scooped by Oracle. (Gee do you think Bob Young (??? I think that was his name...) Kept it a secret from Oracle?) ;-) Yeah, Informix's marketing at its best. (Thanks Diane!) The truth was that Sybase and Informix had ported their code to Linux only Informix was going to be the first to announce a supported and available port. Informix was holding the announcement to their User Group event... And of course the day before, Oracle makes their announcement. For those of you who think that '98 is ancient history, yeah it was a very interesting time. ;-) But hey! What do I know? More than I've talked about openly... ;-P -G _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. If you knew what I know about IBM... you'd wonder how they manage to stay in business with a bunch of fscktards running the show. But then again, in the business world, there are many companies that have fscktards in management. One starts to wonder if this is a necessary personal trait to survive in management. (See Dilbert). I have to apologize for using the term fscktard. I realize that some here, especially those in IBM who either are fscktards or work for a fscktard or fscktart (feminine derivative form of fscktard) , these employees have sensitive ears. But hey! I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Just one of the few here who can bite the figurative 'hand' of IBM because it doesn't feed me. :-) -G _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. With all due respect, I think many of you are not qualified giving impartial opinion about any Informix product. The main question is the future of SE 7.x. And future doesn't mean what happened in the past and/or being abandoned in the present. I guess then, if you feel the need, migrate to a product line (vendor) where you have more clairvoyant capabilities. -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of PN Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2010 9:14 AM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Looking for Expert Opinion regarding Informix SE 7.x history and its future, if any With all due respect, I think many of you are not qualified giving impartial opinion about any Informix product. I imagine that the sort of people who read this newsgroup fall into one or more of the following categories: Informix DBAs [1] Informix Consultants [1] Application Developers who use Informix products [1] IBM employees [2] trolls OTC [3] (in no special order, just that in which they occurred to me :-) Maybe there are impartial industry analysts who read this newsgroup (though I suspect not) and have something to say about future prospects of SE (without charging?) - Surely they'd just talk about IBM's statements and it's track record and maybe compare with Oracle and MySQL. Don't industry analysts publish reports that can be purchased? For me the bottom line is that IBM say they'll keep supporting and selling SE. If SE became unsupported, you probably already have as good idea as anyone of the relative ease of plugging in IDS vs Oracle or some other DBMS aligned with SE's niche. I don't know if i'm especially unqualified or partial. I use SE but I also use another non-Informix DBMS. -- RGB [1] Some of whom still use SE. [2] One or two of whom are still very familiar with SE. [3] 'update statistics' doesn't do much on SE.

I suppose you didn't then have the iPhone app that today instantly alerts you to c.d.i postings on 'update statistics' enabling you to leap into a phone booth and don the costu^H^H^H^H^H send a response within minutes? Still, at least the two cleverest denizens responded at the time ;-) -- RGB Dangerously off-topic and worried where he's headed.

Screw you what about me? [1] No [2] Yes-ish [3] It does update systables/syscolumns though.
