IDS 11.10 on Windows and VMWARE

Hi, I have installed IDS 11.10 TC3 on windows 2003 Enterprise on a Vmware VM machine. Informix dbspaces are reside on a vm datastore which is on a IBM SAN DS5300 (an array 15 physical disks in raid 5 are used to use only a 2TB lun) VM has 8vcpus and 32GB Memory. VM is hosted on an HS22 blade 2cpus 6cores each. An accounting batch process on this VM takes almost 12 hours. When I repeat the same test on physical blade and the same disk layout and the same lun (having installed windows directly on the blade) the same accounting batch process takes about 4 hours. During the 2 tests all informix settings are not changed. I have tried to change informix viops during the VM test from 7 to 15 but the was not better overall time. There are any informix installation-configuration guide on vmware Any ideas; Thanks Sergios
Your results are consistent with my own testing on VMWare running Linux. Any IO on a VM is several times slower than on raw iron. My testing was performed using the Linux dd utility which would eliminate any interaction of Informix from the loop. VMs are NOT ready for prime time for serious IO intensive computing! Art Art S. Hello, Sergios. I just didn´t understand why are you expecting a good result, on a 32 bits version with a 32GB memory VM, and (really) Windows OS???? A better choice, in my opinion, would be running a Linux 64 arch, with a 64 Informix engine (it´s what I use here, on two installation, with excellent responses - big sites). Then you should take the benefits of a better OS server, with an integrated Informix engine.... If you want to read more about VMs running Informix, there´s an excellent presentation on Chat With Labs site: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/wikis/display/ifmxchatwithlab/Home Item 37 - *Best Practices for Running Informix in VMWare vSphere Virtual Environments* Check it out! Hi, I have to run Informix on Windows 32 bit because of the application ventor. The application is certified only on Windows and 32bit Informix. Sergios
Sergios, You should think about install the environment in two different box or virtual machine. 1 - the App in a Win 32 bits using a Informix Client 32 bits 2- The Informix Database server on a linux 64 bits in another box. For the application the Informix version (11.10 probably) is more important, doesn't matter if 32 or 64 bits. Think about it!
