INFORMIX, HEWLETT-PACKARD TO BUILD PERFORMANCE TESTING LAB MENLO PARK, Calif., (June 28, 1993) -- Informix Software, Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Company today announced an agreement to jointly build and staff a research and development laboratory at Informix's Menlo Park headquarters. Scheduled for completion this summer, the lab will maximize the overall speed and optimization of Informix products on HP9000 Series 800 business systems and servers. Initially, development projects will focus on INFORMIX-OnLine, the company's high-performance OLTP database server. Other projects will include industry standard benchmark tests and joint development efforts on current and future releases of OnLine. Informix has also been named a channel partner in HP's Mainframe Alternative (MFA) program and will participate in cooperative marketing efforts to promote the benefits of Informix/HP solutions that provide the power of mainframe computing at a low cost. The plans substantially strengthen the relationship between Informix and HP and further establish both companies as performance leaders in the high-end, business-critical database market. "Performance has always been a key focus of our relationship. This is clearly evidenced by more than 30 published benchmark tests of Informix database software on HP platforms," said Richard W. Sevcik, general manager of HP's Systems and Servers Group. "Our expanded efforts to develop, test and tune our products will ensure that our mutual customers continue to receive the highest possible levels of performance and reliability.S "This agreement is the logical next step in our long-standing partnership with Hewlett-Packard to provide the market with leading-edge, mainframe-caliber solutions," said Phil White, Informix CEO and chairman. "This is a true endorsement by HP of Informix technology and a true commitment by both companies to deliver superior Informix product performance on HP systems." INFORMIX-OnLine is a powerful OLTP database server which provides high availability, data integrity and multimedia data management capabilities. The product supports Informix's entire line of SQL-based application development tools, a large number of third-party tools, and runs on a wide range of UNIX-based computer systems in stand-alone or networked environments. Based on HP's PA-RISC* technology, the HP9000 Series 800 family of business systems and servers is the industry's leading commercial UNIX systems-based computer. With prices beginning at $11,250, the Series 800 family ranges from deskside servers to mainframe-class systems offering proven OLTP performance of up to 710 transactions per second. In its fiscal year ending October 1992, the Series 800 business grew more than 40 percent -- more than three times the industry average -- for the third consecutive year.
