CITY OF SALT LAKE CHOOSES INFORMIX, HEWLETT-PACKARD FOR DOWNSIZING SOLUTION Police, Fire, Airport, City Finance Operations to Run on Client/Server System MENLO PARK, Calif. (June 28, 1993) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX) today announced that the City of Salt Lake, Utah, has begun implementation of a citywide client/server application based on Informix database software and Hewlett-Packard computers. Over the next two years, the City will downsize operations from two existing Unisys mainframes to the new system. The new system is based on Informix database products including the INFORMIX-OnLine database server and the INFORMIX-4GL family of development tools running on three UNIX(-based HP 9000 Series 800 business servers and two HP 9000 Series 700 workstations. Graphical access to the Informix database will be provided through front-end graphical development products from Powersoft Corporation, an Informix In-Sync partner and HP Channel Partner. The City's new system will support city finance, police, fire, public utility, and airport operations including police reports, fire inspections, billing systems, business licensing and other operational functions. The system will initially support 600 users and is expected to increase to 900 users by the time the application is completed in July of 1995. Financial Application, Benchmark Performance Drive Selection Process The first implementation of the program automates the city's accounting and financial systems. Developed by BI-TECH Software, a leading developer of financial software and an Informix Premier VAR, the Informix-based system will improve accounting, budgeting, fixed asset, general ledger, and other financial operations for all city departments. It was the efficient performance of INFORMIX-OnLine and the flexibility of the BI-TECH financial application that drove the decision to go with Informix for the client/server system. To decide on the hardware systems, a benchmark test of the BI-TECH financial application was performed with INFORMIX-OnLine and UNIX-based hardware from several vendors. Hewlett-Packard systems were chosen based on the performance results of the financial system benchmark. "Based on the benchmarks and other information we gathered, Informix and Hewlett-Packard offered the best solution for implementing our client/server applications in terms of performance and ease of use," said Kendrick Cowley, Salt Lake City recorder and director of MIS. "The HP/Informix system will allow users access to the data they need faster and more efficiently, and allow various departments to share data." "We are delighted that the City of Salt Lake has chosen Informix and Hewlett-Packard to play a key role in its move to client/server," said Phil White, Informix chairman and CEO. RThe city's decision to run critical municipal functions on an Informix/HP solution is a strong endorsement of our technologies and illustrates our mutual success in creating mainframe-caliber database technology for open systems solutions."
