Hi, I'm new to Informix and would like to know what is the differences between Informix IDS and ONLINE and SE. I'm using a CASE tool called ER/Studio to generate DDLs for our databases(ORACLE,SYBASE & INFORMIX) for our infomix engine, IDS with UDS 9.1.4, but the tool only support Informix SE and ONLINE so I would like to know the differences between IDS with UDS 9.1.4 and ONLINE and SE. Thanks in anticipation M Lai

IDS 9.14 has all the functionality of OnLine 5.10 and IDS 7.31 (also known in some circles as OnLine), but also adds a lot of extra functionality. Specifically, you can define your own data types in IDS 9.x, and there are extra data types (such as SERIAL8 and BOOLEAN and CLOB) that are built into the database. SE is much simpler than either OnLine or IDS and has no support for variable-length data types (ie VARCHAR or the various blob types). As long as you're using the orthodox data types from the IDS 7.31 database, ER/Studio should do fine for you. As soon as you need to use the new data types, you will probably run into trouble. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
