sqlhosts file
Posted in 2013
A DBA asked how to see the sqlhosts connectivity settings an already-running UNIX instance actually started with, since the file (location possibly overridden by INFORMIXSQLHOSTS) had been edited afterwards. The answer given: query sysmaster:syssqlhosts, which the poster accepted as what she needed, though Art Kagel cautioned that this pseudo-table simply reads the current sqlhosts file like an external table, so post-startup edits show up and the original values are not recoverable. A follow-up question about whether IDS caches sqlhosts (and about onmode -q and DS_TOTAL_TMPSPACE documentation) got only a suggestion to test it empirically, with no definite answer.

On UNIX, the sqlhosts file contains connectivity information that is loaded from the default location in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts, when the database server is started. My problem is, the sqlhosts file gets changed after the server is started, and I do not know where or how I can find the "currently used" sqlhost information. Is there a command that will allow me to view the values in the sqlhosts file when the server was started and the values currently in use? (I need this info to see what Connection Manager groups are set up on the server.) Thanks in advance.
Hello. If your sqlhosts default file was renamed, or located to a new path/file, you should see an INFORMIXSQLHOSTS environment variable, pointing to it´s actual path and file. In sysmaster:syssqlhosts table, you can see your actual configurations. I just don´t know if they are loaded when sysmaster is build (instance creation), or as soon as you start your engine... maybe some friend can clarify this information. Hope this helps. Regards. The sysmaster:syssqlhosts pseudo table just reads the sqlhosts file as if it is an external table, so if someone modified the file after the server started you will only see the new version, not the original. Thank you! Exactly what I needed. I didn't think it was available in the sysmaster database... :)
Art,
Do you know if IDS does any caching of sqlhosts or does it reread sqlhosts for
every new remote connection?
Whilst IDS 12 does have NS_CACHE for caching OS lookups there is nothing for
sqlhosts caching.
IBM,
Checking the onstat -g env documentation for IDS 12.10 it mentions "onmode -q
pdqpriority sessionid" to change the PDQPRIORITY but this is documented or
listed
in the output of onmode --. Are there plans to document this?
Are there plans to add DS_TOTAL_TMPSPACE functionality from XPS into IDS?
Regards,
David.

Most of the onmode environment changing options are not well documented.
The entire -wm/-wf suite of options isn't well documented for example.
Don't know what their plans are for fixing this, but you can write to the
documentation team, they are very responsive in my experience. On the XPS
config parameter, I have no idea.

Oh, easy enough to test the caching of sqlhosts. Start the server, add a
new entry for a remote server, try a distributed query that includes that
entry.
