In article <548n74$ne7@cssun.mathcs.emory.edu>, Jamini Kant <ukantjx@lexis-nexis.com> writes >Hi > >Is there any way or tools available which can extract .o object files >from a executable ? Thinking in one way, its silly question as the >executable is in the machine code. But I heard there are tools which Yes. >actually converts them from machine code to assembly code. Then assembly Correct they are called disassemblers. >code can be converted to a C program !! > Whoa!! Thats not realy possible. There are some experimental tools for this but they don't work very well and only a few compilers are supported (usually one specific compiler and even then one specific version of the compiler). >But my question is if its possible to get the .o files from a executable . > Nope. But if you try nm file.4ge asuuming the file has not been striped (i.e. had debugging info removed) then this will give you a list of all functions and global/static variables and their sizes. Try grep'ing for the word 'FUNC' and sorting by function name then diff the results for each executable. >We have few ESQL/C executables which behave differently from the executables >that we get when we make the exe now. And hence this question. > >Any suggestion ? > Yes. Use SCCS and in each source code module add DEFINE sccs_version CHAR(80) LET sccs_version = "SCCS Version <SCCS flags>" where <SCCS flags> are the version number flags from SCCS. Then you can do 'strings file.4ge | grep "SCCS Version' and get which versions of each module are used in the executable. > > -- David Williams
