Arggghhhh!!!!!!

Neil couldn't install Client SDK 3.50.FC9 on RHEL 5.8: the InstallShield installer failed with "could not load wizard specified in /wizard.inf (104)", and running with -javahome or -console just printed "Extracting Bundled JRE" and exited silently. Suggestions included an IBM technote, pointing -javahome at a real JRE, avoiding OpenJDK/FSF Java (install Sun/Oracle JDK), clearing JDK/JRE references from PATH or renaming the system java, checking disk space, and extracting the media as the informix user. A side debate covered why the installer needs Java at all. Neil ultimately gave up on that build and used a different CSDK version, whose bundled JRE worked with the -javahome workaround.

I am frustrated because: 1. IBM continues to supply its products with Javashite for no good reason 2. I'm sure I've had this issue before but can't recall the solution. ClientSDK 3.50 FC9 on RHEL 5.8. How can I get this installation to work, or even do anything except give oblique messages? Try installing the Oracle JDK (formerly Sun) - gotta to love the irony that you have install a competitor's product, something you don't actually want, just to get the install to work. Try installing IDS on a minimum Linux install without internet access - it can takes hours just to get the install to run Oh and once you have your 64 hardware running 64 bit IDS, complete with the 64bit Java you don't want, try installing 64 bit 4gl - doesn't install unless you have the 32bit Java -what %^&%$^&%&*%*&!!!! Oh and Innovator (whatever the free version is called) FC5/6 and 4gl doesn't play nice - can't be installed in the same INFORMIXDIR - FC4 is fine Have a nice day IBM installation test team :) Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of NEIL TRUBY Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 3:19 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Arggghhhh!!!!!! Hi Neil, Very likely an existing JDK/JRE path, which is incompatible is interfering with installer's functionality. Can you check your path variable, for any reference to existing JDK/JRE installation? Temporarily remove it and retry installation. Note: - Some of the JDK/JREs cannot be used (for example FSF version). - Ensure your product media is complete as it normally ships with a JRE for installer. - In addition, check your disk space. Or the fact the installer relies on classes that don't exist in the openjdk ? But you miss the point - why do have to have a working Java environment to just install the $%^&*$^&*$%^* system especially when you have no intention of ever using Java And why does the 64 bit 4gl need a 32 bit Java installer Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Sundar Shunmugam Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2012 2:12 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Arggghhhh!!!!!! The point is that you don't need a working Java environment. The installer is self contained... or should be, meaning it should provide it's own JRE. There is a downside to this, of course which is size and temp space required... But I don't miss the times where depending on the platform I had to use a different and strange command to uncompress something and then run a shell script with ever changing options... This should not serve as an excuse if/when there are bugs. But the Informix installation is great because: - Supports GUI, silent and console mode - Is simple to use - Has been consistent for some time - Runs fast - Doesn't need to link anything (some others do...) Oh... Of course I may be biased here... But you can be sure I install a lot of instances, clientSDK etc... And it works. :) Regards On Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 9:06 PM, Paul Watson <paul@oninit.com> wrote: > Or the fact the installer relies on classes that don't exist in the openjdk > ? > > But you miss the point - why do have to have a working Java environment to > just install the $%^&*$^&*$%^* system especially when you have no intention > of ever using Java > > And why does the 64 bit 4gl need a 32 bit Java installer > > Cheers > Paul > > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > Sundar > Shunmugam > Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2012 2:12 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Arggghhhh!!!!!! In that case, there is a bug. I haven't hit that one (recent installs on AIX, HP-UX, Linux). We must fix it, but for that it must be reported. I haven't followed the thread in detail. Was it? No idea, it has been a compliant that has come and gone many times over the last 10 ?? years. Have you tried a minimal install on Linux ? AFAIK your installer uses the Sun JDK and there are classes mismatches with the open jre that most Linux's have. Of course why you have to have a working Java environment at all has always been a mystery to me Any error message than the one currently given would be more useful - how about 'ying yang fiddly flop' - more informative that the current one - and Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Fernando Nunes Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2012 4:19 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Arggghhhh!!!!!! The more I think about it, the more a feeling grows... How did the OP uncompress the installer package? Using root or Informix? I'd say it *needs* to be informix... I have some memory of having problems because of this... I always uncompress as informix. During some parts of the installer we used to do a "su - informix" and it could raise problems with file system permissions... But this are just vague memories... > Cheers > Paul > > Regards > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > Fernando Nunes > Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2012 4:19 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Arggghhhh!!!!!! Thanks everybody - even Paul ;-) - for replying. I fixed it by getting an underling to do it for me. I believe he gave up with this version and tried a different version of CSDK whose included Java engine did succumb to Fernando's workaround. cheers Neil
