- What is the correct spelling of the ON_ utilities; ON-Tape, ONTAPE,
ON_Tape...?
Well, most of the Informix training materials show utilities like
"onmonitor" and
"onspaces" spelled in lower case letters with no dash (if it matters....)
the only
thing I've noticed is the "ON-Archive" interface is spelled differently.
- In my documentation (could be old) I keep seeing tbstat and other
utilities with the prefix of "tb". Did that change to "ON" with the
new relase? which utility is still "tb"?
Versions of Informix-OnLine lower than 6.x used the former "tb"
convention.
Informix has changed the convention to "on", but they also offer alias
commands
for the older "tb" convention.....for those of us who find it hard to
break the
habit.
- I understand that I need to use On_Archive for restoring if the
backup (archive) was created with On_Archive. What about ON_Tape?
If the backup tape was created with ON_Tape, it is logical that I
should use ON_Tape to restore, I just want to be sure....
You are correct. The whole point is you can't mix archive tapes that
were
created by the different utilities. That includes logical log backups
too.
- which utiliy do you see being used most frequently by the Informix
admin person?
It depends. ON-Archive is powerful, but complex and requires more set up
time.
If you have an extremely large database and want to archive only certain
portions
of the database, this can be accomplished with ON-Archive. If you want
to archive multiple dbspace sets simultaneously, this can also be done
with ON-Archive (among other nifty features)..
For simplicity sake, ontape will also do the job. However, it archives
the entire
instance. You can also only use one tape drive --- no "parallel"
archiving. If the
database isn't too large, ontape shouldn't be a problem.
Customers are using both --- probably more are using ontape if they used
earlier
versions of OnLIne in the past. ontape use to be "tbtape" in versions
5.0 and
earlier.
- What utility do you use for granting access for users? The firm I'm
dealing with uses DB_Access. Is it an Informix utility or third
party?
dbaccess is an informix interface that is bundled with Informix-OnLine.
It allows
you to type in sql statements that grant and revoke privileges. There is
also a graphical interface for accomplishing this inside of
Informix-ViewPoint
Pro. ViewPoint is not not bundled with OnLine.
There are also some third party tools (one that I know of is Advanced Data
Tools)
that allow you to create "group" permissions and add users to these
different
groups. It was pretty easy to use and the price was right. The company
is
listed in Informix's VAR catalog.
