change LTAPEDEV in onlne mode
Posted in 2007
Frank asked whether LTAPEDEV can be changed on the fly with onmode rather than editing the ONCONFIG or using onmonitor; his goal was to switch to /dev/null to discard logs when the log-backup disk filled. One reply suggested onmode -wf/-wm, but others (including IBM) said that doesn't work for LTAPEDEV: ontape picks up an edited ONCONFIG value at next start, while switching to /dev/null needs the engine restarted or onmonitor. The practical workaround offered was to point LTAPEDEV at a symbolic link and repoint the link (e.g. to /dev/null) from the ALARMPROGRAM script after checking free space.

HI, Folks,
Can we change LTAPEDEV by running onmode(?) command (NOT through Vi or
ONMONITOR) and make it effective immediately in online mode?
Thanks,
Frank
I doubt you can use any onmode command to change LTAPEDEV/TAPEDEV. ONMONITOR
seems to be an option without bouncing the engine.

See a similar discussion on comp.databases.informix last week. It seems that
most recent versions allow you to change LTAPEDEV to anything but /dev/null on
the fly just be editing the ONCONFIG file and bouncing any running ontape -c
instances. According to the IDS 10.00 Administrator's Guide manual it takes
effect when ontape is next started. Changing LTAPEDEV to /dev/null still
requires restarting the engine (or IB using onmonitor) since it's the engine
that needs to know about the change not ontape.

You can't change LTAPEDEV using onmode -wf or -wm.

The reason why we want this feature is, if we found the logical log backup
disk is going to full then we will just mark the log as backed up by
changing LTAPEDEV to /dev/null. Do we have any other options?
We backup logs based on our own event driven(whenever a log is filled up)
script, NOT continuous way.

Well have you considered making LTAPEDEV a link?
For Example
LTAPEDEV /dummy
Then soft link to whatever you want, if you detect that the logs space is
full, you can change the link to /dev/null.

Frank-
You're using the ALARMPROGRAM setting in your onconfig to call a
script to back up your logs, right? On HP-UX, you can use bdf | grep
"mydevice" | awk '{print$5}' to see if your disk is getting full before
you start writing to it, something similar should work on AIX. You
should be able to use your script to change your link to a valid device.
Or it could trigger a job to send your backed up log files to tape (or
whatever you do with them) and clean out your directory for more files
before you execute your log backup.
