Gil, We were ok to help you have your 4gl app work with SQL Server, as it relates to an Informix product (4GL). Now, you clearly ask for something that we do not want to debate here. Why the hell would you want to migrate? Wait a minute, You guys have been most helpful to me in the past, and I have appreciated the open exchange of information on the group. So, why are you so upset by this fellows question? If IFX is a superior product, you should be encouraging this guy to do what he's doing in the hopes that folks will see that IFX does some things much better than SQL Server. I didn't think there was an "accepted topic" list here. I work on Oracle, Pervasive, SQL Server, Sybase and Informix, and embrace the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. BTW, who said that you speak for everyone on the group when you say "we do not want to debate here". Pretty arrogant if you ask me, and that kind of attitude doesn't exactly server to spread the good news about what a strong product Informix really is. Just my 2 cents. Hope my post isn't "banned" because I mentioned other RDBMS. Tam. I couldn't agree more with your post. This product is on a respirator, waiting to die. It needs all the help it can get. In fact I'm guessing ( a stretch here :-) that there will be no new product launches or announcements till after the first of next year for Informix. The last whimpering gasp leaked to one of the trade rags last week about "cheetah" created zero buzz like nothing. It's just a bunch of nothing. Until there is some kind of serious marketing it's 80% of IBM's time with Informix to do nothing and only cater to the top 20% who are actually using the product, just to maintain fluid cash flow on renewals and paltry if-any new sales. It's not about new sales but simply keeping it alive. This is why you don't see any application announcements about XYZ company writing apps for Informix--it's not going to happen! bwhahahahhahahahahaahhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :-) Tam OShanter wrote: > Wait a minute, > > You guys have been most helpful to me in the past, and I have appreciated > the open exchange of information on the group. > > So, why are you so upset by this fellows question? > > If IFX is a superior product, you should be encouraging this guy to do what > he's doing in the hopes that folks will see that IFX does some things much > better than SQL Server. > > I didn't think there was an "accepted topic" list here. > > I work on Oracle, Pervasive, SQL Server, Sybase and Informix, and embrace > the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. > > BTW, who said that you speak for everyone on the group when you say "we do > not want to debate here". > > Pretty arrogant if you ask me, and that kind of attitude doesn't exactly > server to spread the good news about what a strong product Informix really > is. > > Just my 2 cents. Tam, Gil, I am not looking at upsetting anyone here, and people tend to be upset real quick those days... A lot of us are fighting really strong for Informix. I also work on project involving myriads of other engines. When I have some questions on DB2 I go to the IDUG's forum, same for Oracle or MySQL. If I had some migration plans from MySQL to SQL Server, I would probably go to the SQL Server forum and not provoke a troll war on the MySQL forum. And you are right, I should not have said "we" but "some of us", and therefore I apologize on this very precise part of my answer. Peace. jgp > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Tam OShanter > Sent: Friday, September 29, 2006 20:43 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Infomix test databases for migration to SQL Server - please > help > > Wait a minute, > > You guys have been most helpful to me in the past, and I have appreciated > the open exchange of information on the group. > > So, why are you so upset by this fellows question? > > If IFX is a superior product, you should be encouraging this guy to do > what > he's doing in the hopes that folks will see that IFX does some things much > better than SQL Server. DE, I like your medical analogy, but I don't see to what it applies... Facts: - IDS license sales (not maintenance) have grown over 20% in Q1 06 and Q2 06. - New unique (and impressive) solutions (<--- look @ final S) are being developed on (and only) IDS because it's the only database capable of its unique feature set. - New customers! New users! - Partners to demo applications and be proud of being Informix partners. - Consultants to show-up at events. - Commitment to major release every 18 months: and they (IBM) STICK to it, Cheetah's the next one. - New features provoke happiness on DBAs faces (as I am not one, I know it's pretty difficult to get one to laugh before he/she had a couple of beers). - Pragmatic XML in vNext... - One sad thing: the end of ISA :-)... Replaced by another web-based tool, providing more features, more reporting capabilities... Where do I got all that from? It's all public, from an IBM Software Group meeting in Paris. They don't hide Informix in Informix-only event, it is highlighted... I did a small report here: http://www.jgp.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=28 Is that a sign of anemia? If yes, please give me a shot! Also look at the number of newbies questions in this forum and others. Is it the sign of a dying product? Well, not for me Sir! Can IBM do a better job? Sure! They can always progress. They are listening. Did Informix do a good marketing job in its time? I'll let you answer... I am not sure that doing a new billboard war would do us any good. Seriously, the situation, for us Informix users, is far better than it used to be 3-4 years ago, and I think it is better than 6-7 years ago. jgp > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Double Echo > Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2006 03:12 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Infomix test databases for migration to SQL Server - please > help > > > I couldn't agree more with your post. > > This product is on a respirator, waiting to die.
