RE: Informix on AIX
Posted in 1999
Bjarne,
We upgraded existing Informix instances to IDS 7.30.
In fact several upgrades have occurred:
1. From IDS 7.24.UC1 to IDS 7.30.UC3-1
2. From IDS 7.30.UC3-1 to IDS 7.30.UC3X3
3. From IDS 7.30.UC3X3 to IDS 7.30.UC6-1=20
4. From IDS 7.30.UC6-1 to IDS 7.30.UC7-1 (occurred yesterday)
The IDS 7.30.UC3X3 version contained patches for the oncheck -cI =
problem.
We subsequently upgraded to IDS 7.30.UC6-1, because it supposedly =
contained
a permanent fix for this problem and other subquery related issues.
However, the oncheck -cI runtime issue was still present. Informix
Technical
Support suggested the "BTAPPENDERS 1" workaround. It works for us with =
both
IDS 7.30.UC6-1 and IDS 7.30.UC7-1. (IDS 7.30.UC7-1 also had oncheck
run-time
problems until we re-added this $ONCONFIG parameter).
To answer your other questions:
1. Most of our indexes are in different dbspaces than the data. For =
small
tables we did not put the indexes into a different dbspace.
2. For each Informix upgrade, we installed the IDS software into a new
directory.
Environment variables for user Informix were changed to reference =
the new
directory
during standalone testing. After tests were completed, logical =
links
were changed
to reference the new $INFORMIXDIR directory.
3. Update statistics were run after each upgrade. However, I doubt =
that
they
were necessary when upgrading from IDS 7.30 version to another.
The testing with and without "BTAPPENDERS 1" for IDS 7.30.UC7-1 was
performed
before the update statistics. A significant performance difference =
was=20
observed when I put the "BTAPPENDERS 1" back into the $ONCONFIG =
file.=20
I hope that this information helps.
Rick

Hi Rick
Hope you can help me.
We are also running IDS 7.30.UC6-1 on an IBM RS6000 F50. I upgraded =
from a
Informix OnLine 7.22 to IDS 7.30 following the Migration Guide. IDS =
7.30
.UC6-1 was installed into a new dir. the environment was changed to =
point
to this dir. The IDS was brought up again and after sysmaster and =
sysutils
was recreated I ran "update statistics" and "oncheck -cI =
<database-name>"
on all the databases. Since then the "oncheck -cI <database-name>" has =
gone
from 30 minutes to over 22 hours.
I have tried to set the "BTAPPENDERS 1" in the $ONCONFIG. It didn't
help. I have a case running with Informix Tech. in England. But they
haven't been able to come with a reason nor a solution.
I have a few questions I would like to ask you.
Did you upgrade to 7.30 from a later version or did you upgrade by =
init.
a new server and then move the databases to the 7.30 server with
dbexport/dbimport?
Do you have tables in one dbspace and the associated indexes in an =
other
dbspace or do you keep both indexes and tables in the same dbspace?
Any help is appreciated.
