Why IDS-Linux is so slow?

Hello all,
now I'm looking for the best platform to run Informix-OnLine on Intel.
I've tested some versions on my Celeron-333 with 64 Mb RAM and
single 6.4 Gb Quantum Fireball HDD. I've tried to dbimport database with
100 tables, 110 Mb unloaded data, ~40 search indexes and
~200 referential constraints, and UPDATE STATISTICS MEDIUM for almost
all tables.
All servers were configured with 4000 buffers, 6000 locks, 2 Mb physical
log,
3Mb logical log and 6 logical logs. Import into non-root cooked dbspace.
Overall times are:
IDS-Personal Edition Win95 - 22 min
IDS 7.23 Solaris 2.5 - 34 min
IDS 7.30 RedHat 5.2 - 65 min
Any comments - why so long on RedHat?
Any hints would be appreciated.
Leonid
Leonid,
The problem sounds like your UPDATE STATISTICS command.
Running it MEDIUM on everything has probably been part of
the problem, but without knowing all the details--which I don't
want to know--it would be my SWAG on this one.
Rerun as simply "UPDATE STATISTICS" and then run your tests.
After getting your baseline times, then delta your tunings,
not only for UPDATE STATISTICS, but also for the engine. If
you have followed the documentation for the engine, your
system should be humming. I do know there were bugs in 7.2x
for UPDATE STATISTICS, but these were supposedly fixed.
Follow the UPDATE STATISTICS guidelines in the Informix
documentation, and then look at your settings in your
ONCONFIG. Between fixing your ONCONFIG and UPDATE STATISTICS
you should be able to improve things significantly. I would
also look at your indexes, these may not be appropriately
done for Informix whereas they work perfectly for Oracle,
simply because the optimizer may not function exactly the
same.
Thanks,
Tim
