Which is best On-Bar and On-Tape
Posted in 2018
Thread comparing Informix ontape vs onbar backup approaches. Consensus: ontape easier to configure (onconfig file changes only) and restore; onbar better for retention management via storage manager and offers parallel operations. User decided on ontape for IDS 12.10FC5 due to unclear onbar restore process. Archecker utility recommended for backup verification.

Friends,
I need all your opinions on the best approach in configuring onbar and ontape
backups.
1) Which is easy to configure.
2) Which type of backup is easy to restore.
3) Is retention enabled for both types.
4) which one is best to configure continuous logical logs.
5) how to verify the backup is valid.
please share your valuable answers. thank you all
1) Which is easy to configure.
-- ontape, just make changes in the onconfig file
2) Which type of backup is easy to restore.
-- ontape
3) Is retention enabled for both types.
-- onbar manages retention via the Storage Manager you are using, ontape
retention is a more manual process
4) which one is best to configure continuous logical logs.
-- either
5) how to verify the backup is valid.
-- restore to a different machine (same OS, same IDS, same disk layout)
please share your valuable answers. thank you all

Which Informix version.
For onbar are you using a storage manager or going to be using Informix's
built storage Manager?
Answers inline.

Are you backing up to tape or disk?
onbar is simpler if you are using a 3rd party storage manager to tape.
With ontape are you backing up to 1 file, multiple files or a folder?
With ontape you need to manage the generated files yourself whereas onbar will
do this for you.

Restoring to the same machine/instance or a different machine/instance?
onbar if to the same machine/instance but ontape is not that hard either.
> 3) Is retention enabled for both types.
ontape retention is manual.
onbar can have rentention configured and managed via the onsmsync program

Either support continous logical logs
> 5) how to verify the backup is valid.
ontape would be via a restore to a test system
onbar has abilities to verify a backup but to be sure you would need to
restore to a test system

My environment is Linux with IDS 12.10FC5 and primary storage manager

Hi,
I'd like to agree with David than onbar is very easy to configure at the
Informix end, however it does need extra configuration at the storage manager
end if you are using an enterprise solution.
One thing I'd add is that the archecker utility can be used to verify backups.
If you're using onbar 'onbar -v' uses archecker.
Leaving aside the balanced pros and cons of ontape versus onbar, I would add
my opinion that a properly set up onbar system saves copying backups around,
offers parallel backup/restore and point in time recovery, and is just
generally nicer. I would never go back to ontape.
Ben.
