These are set in $ONCONFIG
SHMVIRTSIZE 16000
SHMADD 8192
SHMTOTAL 0
BUFFERS 100000

IDS_7.3 says:
INFORMIX-OnLine Shared Memory Parameters:
========================================
SHMMAX: 12000000000 (this seems very high to me, could this cause the error?)
SHMSEG: 15
SEMMNS: 300
LOCATION OF SHARED MEMORY:

INFORMIX-OnLine Kernel Parameters:
=================================
MAXMEM: Not applicable
SEMMNI: 50
SEMMNS: 300
SEMMSL: Not applicable
NFILES: Not applicable

These are set in $ONCONFIG
SHMVIRTSIZE 16000
SHMADD 8192
SHMTOTAL 0
BUFFERS 100000

I was not aware that IDS 7.30.UC10 was ported too unixware 7.1.1. We had to
revert
back to unixware 7.0.1 as Informix did not support 7.1.0.
We have 756 Mb RAM and here is what we finally configured to get the engine
up and running:
$ONCONFIG:
BUFFERS 160000
SHMVIRTSIZE 120000
SHMADD 8000
SHMTOTAL 0
.I changed the kernel parameters as follows:
cd /etc/conf/bin
./idtune -fc param value
SHMSEG 15
SHMMAX 12000000000
SEMMNS 300
SFNOLIM 2048
SFSZLIM 0x7FFFFFFF
HFSZLIM 0x7FFFFFFF
HDATLIM 0x10000000
SDATLIM 0x10000000
HSTKLIM 0x10000000
SSTKLIM 0x10000000
HVMMLIM 0x20000000
SVMMLIM 0x20000000
MAXUP 120
NPROC 600
SHMMNI 1000

Could be. Reduce it.

Read idtune(1M) man page to configure the kernel.
Also, install latest UW7.1.1's ptfs.
There is a ptf that fixes an Informix bug.

After receiving the info to change HVMMLIM and SVMMLIM to the max values
0x7FFFFFFF it seems to work now.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
