SE Database with Transactions vs. C-ISAM
Posted in 1998
Dear Informixers, on a Siemens-Nixdorf RM400-330 running with SINIX 5.42B00, I have Informix-SE 5.07UC1 as backend. There is a database without trans- actions which is mostly used by a C-ISAM application which reads and writes data to that database. SQL is mostly used for reporting purposes, with some occasional ESQL/C programs also running against this database. I now have to rewrite an ESQL/C program which extracts data from this database and sends them off to a remote server. Up to now, only data from one table were read, and for each record successfully read and transmitted, an "archive" flag was set. Now an additional detail table was introduced for that master table, and for each record from the master table, the details also must be transmitted. To ensure data consistency, I want to wrap this in a transaction, but I am not sure about the implications for C-ISAM. I have no control over the C-ISAM application that runs against the database. Is it safe to just turn on transactions for the database ("START DATABASE...") or will there be side effects that I have to be aware of?
