HDR Replication -Onconfig Changes
Posted in 2012
A DBA upgrading an HDR pair from 11.50.FC5 to 11.70.FC4 (HP-UX) asked when to change LOGFILES, LOGSIZE and PHYSFILE on the secondary, planning to initialize it with onconfig.std defaults first, then restore. Answers from Madison Pruet, Everett Mills and Art Kagel: these parameters must match the primary before the physical restore, and you should not run oninit -iy/FULL_DISK_INIT on the secondary at all. Correct sequence: set up the final onconfig and sqlhosts, create/permission cooked chunk files, back up the primary, run ontape -p on the secondary, then restart HDR. Larry Sorensen also suggested simply installing 11.70 in a new directory and redirecting INFORMIXDIR on both servers.

We have HDR setup between Production and Disaster Recovery. I am about to
upgrade to Informix 11.70.FC4 ( from v11.50.FC5). My questions pertain to
certain parameters in the Onconfig file on the Secondary server.
(OS: HP-UX ia64)
While I run the Level 0 archive (v11.70) on the primary I will install
Informix Tools and Informix ( 11.70) binaries on the Seconary. I will
Initialize the Secondary Instance ( oninit -iy) and shut it down ( onmode
-yuk). For the Initialize step I would have the following params match
onconfig.std:
LOGFILES 6
LOGSIZE 10000
PHYSFILE 50000
(FULL_DISK_INIT 1 // to initialize root chunk)
Once I shutdown the Secondary I will start the Physical Restore ( ontape -p)
of the Secondary and restart HDR.
In production these values are:
LOGFILES 200
LOGSIZE 40000
PHYSFILE 1000000
Q. At what point can I update these params (LOGSIZE, LOGFILES, PHYSFILE) on
the Secondary to match the Production server. Do I break the replication after
the HDR setup, update the Secondary's config and restart HDR? Is there a good
practise to accomplish what I want?
These parameters must match between the primary and secondary from the
start - prior to the physical recovery.

That seems like a lot of work. Can't you just install the 11.70 software in a
different directory on each server, copy over onconfigs and sqlhosts, etc. on
each server; and then stop the databases, redirect $INFORMIXDIR to the new
installation and start up both primary and secondary instances?

OK. Then my steps on the Secondary would be:
1. oninit -iy to Initialize Secondary Instance with values:
LOGFILES 6
LOGSIZE 10000
PHYSFILE 50000
(FULL_DISK_INIT 1 // to initialize root chunk)
2. onmode -yuk
3. Update onconfig values to reflect Primary values:
LOGFILES 200
LOGSIZE 40000
PHYSFILE 1000000
4. ontape -p // start Physical Restore
Hope this will work correctly. Thanks for the tip.
I have not had to do this in my test HDR upgrade setup as the Instances are
sized very small and are identical to start with.
Murali-
You should make the changes to your onconfig on your secondary before you
start the physical restore from the primary.

You do NOT have to initialize the instance on the secondary as long as the
chunk file paths exist and have the correct privileges. Just set up the
final version of the ONCONFIG file as you will be running it (so mostly
exactly as it was under 11.50 but adding settings for any new features and
adjusting based on changes between the versions - primarily the RA_
parameters). Once that is done, then just perform the ontape -p physical
restore and reinstate HDR with the appropriate onmode commands.

A bit easier than that. With HDR you don't have to initialize the server.
You just have to make sure that the items in the config file match up. The
only real difference that should be in place is the server name.
The order of setup would be.
1) get the onconfig files set up correctly.
2) get the sqlhost files on the primary/secondary set up correctly
3) if using cooked files for the chunks, then touch the files and set the
permissions on the secondary that will become the chunks.
4) take a backup of the primary
5) perform a physical restore on the secondary.
You do not run oninit -iy on the secondary.

NO!, just start with #4
