Excessive Llogging
Posted in 1999
I am having a problem with what I'll call excessive logical logging. The problem engine, is Informix 7.23 UC7 with HP-10.20 as the OS. When I attempt to duplicate the problem in another instance; there is a difference in pattern of logical logging. A stored procedure loads 100,000 records (28 byte record, ) to dbeng-1 and fills fourteen logical logs (7500 pages each). The same procedure loading 100,000 records to dbeng-2 fills only one log plus 12% of a second log (5000 pages each). Both engines are on the same box. Both databases have buffered logging. Both are 7.23 UC7. Both engines have 32k log buffers. The data is loaded to each of the databases with no other activity. Onlog shows there are very near 7,500 home row inserts logged, and 7,500 add item to index logged within dbeng-1. With dbeng-2 there are 89,000 home row inserts (HINSERT) logged and 89,000 add item to index (ADDITEM) logged, per log. Again both databases have buffered logging, and dbeng-1 has only this one database (and the system databases). The stored procedure does a "look up" on a table that is fragmented (round robin) and has detached indexes in dbeng-1. The same "look up" table is not fragmented, and the indexes are in the same database space as the table in dbeng-2. What would cause the difference in the way this one engine does it's logical logging versus other? .
