steveFarris reported that in I4GL 7.1 on Solaris 7 an UPDATE setting a date column to null worked in ISQL but not in a compiled 4GL program. He then said to scratch it because the cause was something else. Ray Margarella suggested setting the column to an empty string; Jonathan Leffler said that once worked but in modern versions it sets the column to blank. Unresolved publicly.

Hi,
on Solaris 7, I4GL 7.1 this does not work
update atable set (somedate) = (null) where state="CA"
however, using ISQL the above would work, but in a compiled 4gl program
it does not set the date field to null...it does not change the field at
all. Is there some other way to set a date field to null??

Once upon a long time ago, that would have done the job.
However, that will set Acolumn to blank in all modern versions of the
server/I4GL.
