Rownum in Informix/Oracle

Hi I'm trying to convert some Oracle Queries to run under Informix. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent to the ROWNUM argument/column for the Informix select statement as one query I have uses this to generate an index column and i can't see a way to replicate this in Informix at the moment. Many Thanks Steve Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
Informix has no equivalent to Oracle's ROWNUM (which numbers rows returned by a query, isn't it?). You could create these numbers by dumping the results of your query into a pre-created temp table that has all the columns returned by the query AND an additional SERIAL column - very klunky! If you explain your challenge a little more, someone could provide you a solution that does not need the use of ROWNUM.
