Re: How do you guys maintain DDL versions?

I use StarTeam from StarBase. This is a version control software which has many nifty features for team development effort like producing reports of changes, creating milestone, branching, bug tragcking, and many reports. The software however does not know anything about database objects. Every database object must be stored in a text file. If one is starting a brand new project, it is easy to do this. With an existing DBMS, you must first convert every object into a text file which is cumbersome. Another problem w/ Starbase and probably w/ all of the available version control software is that even when an object is locked, we still cannot prevent a locked object from being override by someone using ISQL. Also the versioning metadata in the database is very difficult. You need to bcp out/in the metadata to file then use version control software to keep track of them. I think the only way to do version control of DBMS objects correctly is through the DB engine itself. This would be a great feature considering how these engines are becoming more object oriented.
