cmsm in a cluster + switchover? DRAUTO=1+3 ???
Posted in 2013
Alexandre asked whether, with Connection Manager (CMSM) handling failover in an 11.50 cluster (primary + SDS + HDR), automatic switchover back to the original primary is possible, since docs warn against also setting DRAUTO=1/2. Art Kagel explained you should use only one arbitrator: let CM manage failover (it's more robust and lets you prioritise the SDS node), but failing back to the original layout is normally a manual step. Alexandre tested stopping cmsm, running 'onmode -d make primary' on the old primary, restarting the downed SDS instance, then restarting cmsm, which worked. For automatic failback he was told to file a feature request with IBM (a new request tool was due to be announced at IIUG).

Hello. He have a cluster, version 11.50 (plans to upgrade soon) with one primary, one SDS, and one HDR. I have a simple question, but didn´t find the answer yet, so maybe someone could help me. If I enable DRAUTO=1, I can easily see the changes rolling from hdr secondary to primary, and vice versa, as expected if a failure occurs. But now, I am trying to do a lab (in informix VA cluster demonstration), but... there is no way to do an automatic switchover (like DRAUTO=1+3) with cmsm enabled? Documentation says it is even not recommended: "You should configure only one failover arbitrator; either the built-in Informix failover arbitrator or the Connection Manager. You should not set DRAUTO to 1 or 2 if you have configured failover using the Connection Manager." Does it means that if I use cmsm features, I cannot retrieve the same physical design as I had, before the node failure? Thanks!
No. It means that you have to use the CMSM failover configuration and let Connection Manager manage the failover. This has the advantage that you can have CM set the SDS secondary as the first choice to make into primary and leave the HDR secondary as is unless the SDS also fails then upgrade the HDR secondary to primary. Having the CM manage failover is more robust than DR_AUTO. I makes additional checks before failing over, and in 11.70 more so and in 12.10 you can specify alternative communications paths to insure that you never end up with two primaries. Art Art S. Thanks very much, Art.
We always like to prior our primary instance, in a physical "site A" location,
that´s what I tried to say.
What if I just move the "old primary node", now an SDS secondary (after the
failover is finished), to a primary node?
onmode -d make primary [node]Couldn´t it work? Cmsm wouldn´t do the automatic changes? I will try that
later... just an idea.
Thanks, anyway.

Ok good news, it worked (as not as I would enjoy, but):
1) I´ve stopped the cmsm
2) I´ve run "onmode -d make primary c1primary" into the c1primary instance,
that was an SDS secondary after failover
3) It became an HDR primary, but.... my previous HDR primary went off.
Curiously, only the c1sds1 instance went down. As soon as I´ve
started it again, it became online as an SDS node, as I expected to see
in automatic way.
4) Restarted the cmsm, just fine
Is this something unusual? Did I hit a shoot in the dark?
Thanks a lot for your attention.

CM will hadle the initial failover, failing back to "normal" is usually a

Ok Art, I understand.
But for keeping the "no downtime feature + automatic redirection" of cmsm, I
would like to suggest this automatic switchover, the same way as it works with
DRAUTO=1, for example, for maybe a future release request.
Is there some contact to should I report this?
Thanks a lot!
