Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A user on IDS 7.30.UC7 under Linux couldn't find onbar/onarchive and asked how to run an unattended online archive. The advice: use ontape, fed with blank input (e.g. `echo "\\n\\n" | ontape ...`) so it answers its interactive prompts and runs unattended; onbar would require setting up a storage manager such as ISM, which is extra work. Caveat raised: this only works cleanly if the archive fits on one tape — otherwise you must script around ontape's prompts (e.g. with expect plus a tape autoloader) to swap volumes.

echo "\\n\\n" | ontape
?
For onbar, you need to set up a storage manager. ISM should be there, but
it's a bit of work.

Exactly what was asked for: "unattended online backup/archive of the
database".

Echo two newlines, pipe those to ontape.

Provided it fits on one tape. :>

Yep.
Or, you can write scripts to process the console output of ontape and switch
tape drives when each tape fills up. It works, as long as your operators
remember to fill each drive daily.

Which is exactly what we did using expect and 4mm autoloaders. We have
occasionally encoutered errors where expect didn't know what to expect,
but in general it was a pretty solid solution. We don't have operators,
instead we used to rotate the tape duties through the admins. Powerful
incentive for getting the script right, when you're also the guy who
gets paged at 3:00AM for the failure!
