Uninstalling CSDK 2.7 Windows Server 2008R2
Posted in 2015
Question: how to uninstall Client SDK 2.7 on Windows Server 2008R2, where no uninstaller appears in the GUI, Add/Remove Programs doesn't work, and there's no uninstallcsdk.exe (CSDK 2.9 uninstalls fine). Art Kagel suggested older CSDK releases simply shipped without an uninstall facility, but no actual removal method is given, and a PMR was opened. The thread then drifts into a debate about CSDK licensing/cost (Art and others quoting license terms saying CSDK and Informix Connect don't count toward entitlements) and general complaints about IBM licensing clarity and audits. No resolution to the uninstall problem is recorded.

One of my colleagues is having trouble uninstalling CSDK 2.7 on Windows Server 2008R2. He says there isn't an option in the GUI to uninstall, nor is there an "uninstallcdsk.exe" or similar anywhere. He does what we would expect in the Add/Remove programs, but that doesn't seem to do it. Anyone had similar issues (from way back since it's 2.7). He's able to uninstall fine with 2.9 on another box, but not with 2.7. I don't have access to his WS so playing middle man here. Uninstall didn't used to be included in CSDK. I guess that 2.9 was when it was added. That's fairly old though. Art Art S. That's the impression we're getting. So how does one uninstall it? Amazing that I've opened a PMR for this but that seemed to be the thing to do. This is being driven by the current debate about CSDK "not being free" and the apparent solution is to uninstall the CSDK and install iConnect. Thanks Art. Mark
What debate? CSDK is still free, has been since shortly before IBM took over the product line. I haven't heard anything different. Art Art S. Disclaimer: The following does not represent my employer's view or position. I cannot hate more those "debates". Most of the time they have no bases and many times they're caused by unclear license terms. The discussion must be based around the license terms. For latest v12.10x it's here: http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf/lilookup/DC4C1EF750EFBCB385257D9000 8139E7?OpenDocument I suppose CSDK is a "supporting program" "not used for establishing required entitlements". But if anyone is not comfortable with the license ask an IBM sales representative to comment on it. Not on a vague question. State and quote the license aspect that confuse you. Having said this, it's true the CSDK is not freely available to download apart the DE version. But why should it be? Only Informix customers have the need to use it, and those can/should access them through passport advantage or FixCentral. Regards. Here are the relevant terms from the license: *When determining the number of entitlements required for Licensee's installation or use of the Program, the installation or use of the following Program components are not taken into consideration. In other words, Licensee may install and use the following Program components, under the license terms, but these components are not used to determine the number of entitlements required for the Program.* *IBM Informix Client SDK (CSDK)* *IBM Informix Connect Runtime* *IBM Informix ESQL/C Runtime* *IBM Informix JDBC Driver/Embedded SQL* My reading of this is that you can install CSDK, iConnect, ESQL/C Runtime, and the JDBC libraries anywhere you need to as long as your license for the engine is still valid and those installations are not counted towards CPUs, PVUs, named or unnamed users for the purposes of calculating the license and maintenance costs of the engine. That sounds like free to me. Art Art S. Fernando - "We" have been around a long time, and this situation of unclear licensing is a real issue for many informix clients. To position it as "just contact an IBM rep for clarity" is very misleading. If it were that easy, the clients I talk to would never be confused. That is not the case. And when the clients have many different reps throughout their informix life, some of the new reps themselves don't understand licensing. Can any of the informix community on this forum support what I'm saying? Or am I the only one with clients confused about licensing? Thanks - Mark Scranton The Mark Scranton Group www.markscranton.com
One of my biggest peeves about IBM licensing is that they change the rules mid-stream. You purchase and install and license the product, use it for a few years, then hear about some license issue or change. Are you still in compliance? Are you grandfathered (probably not)? How do you know? And what are the new calculations to use to figure on your own? "Just ask your IBM rep" isn't a good solution because that potentially (dare I say, usually?) leads to an audit! Especially if they discover previous license changes that you are no longer in compliance with, regardless of whether you were notified about them or not. (This exact situation happened at 2 clients/employers, so (a) not a one-off case, and (b) obviously there is a LOT of confusion among the customers!) If I am a customer, I want to know whether I am in compliance or not BEFORE asking a rep, so I am at least prepared for a "surprise" audit or build in the budget for future charges to be coming. I received an interesting answer on licensing from an oracle rep at a Solaris event, I will paraphrase and make it generic: "Rather than only talking to a rep, get the licensing team from <the product vendor> to confirm in writing your licensing situation and that you are in compliance. All licensing issues go from the audit team to the licensing team to confirm the situation before it goes to the legal team, if the licensing team have signed off on your situation the audit team cannot complain!"
