Meaning of npused in systables.

I am running Online 5.01.UD3 on an RS/6000. I have the need to know the amount of disk space that individual tables are using and naturally thought that I could utilize the value of "npused" in the systables table. However, I find that some of the tables show a negative value for this column, even immediately after running "update statistics". How should I interpret this? And, if this is not the correct method to determine disk usage, what is? Thanks in advance!
