ism_startup does not start the database, and the -init flag to it does not
initialize the database. The ism_startup script simply starts the ISM or
Informix Server Manager which is just one management tool to monitor and
control IDS. ism_start -init simply initialized the disk files ISM needs.
To start the Informix (IDS) engine run:
oninit -vy
To initialize the disk needed to start a new instance for the first time
(DON'T DO THIS WITH AN ESTABLISHED INSTANCE, IT WILL TRASH THE EXISTING DATA!):
oninit -ivy
Once the engine has started up you can bring it to online mode with:
onmode -m
Why are you having trouble starting up ISM? Don't know, never use the thing.

Maesh,
As far as I understood, you are experiencing problems with ISM (Informix
Storage Manager)'s file-based database and you want to get rid of the
problems by reinitializing ISM? Were there problems reported with NFS
mounted devices configured to be used by ISM as disk devices in front of
your re-init activity? Did you already check the recommended kernel
parameters, especially to nfiles? I expect you have sufficient memory?
To reinitialize the ISM probably you forgot to apply some needed steps such
as
- Check for related nsr daemons still hanging around, see 'ps -ef |
grep nsr', kill them smoothly as needed
- rename or delete the pre-exisisting $INFORMIXDIR/ism directory
- delete the sym. link /nsr pointing to $INFORMIXDIR/ism
(Both will be recreated by the ism_startup script if started with option
'-init')
Now the 'ism_startup -init' as user root should work fine...
