Tim, Let's give credit where credit's due. I'm not sure that c.d.i. is an "official" source of Informix support (it should be!!!). This is strictly a "back channel" source of support. All you folks at Informix correct me if I'm wrong, but none of the Informixer's on the newsgroup check the database to see if a poster has a support contract before responding to a posting. But you're right. Posting in c.d.i. is at least as good as, and usually better than calling the support numbers. By the time you get hold of someone in Lenexa who knows what you're talking about, you'll have code fragments, pointers to more info, and first-hand answers from people whose jobs depend on getting the answers right....and in the real world, not from people whose sole use of Informix is to use it to check the bugs database. This is not a criticism of Informix...it's the nature of the support beast. If you think this is now a good support source, imagine how good it would be if Informix (and other, less-enlightened vendors) got serious about delivering support over the Internet. The difference is this: When you deal with "real" support, you're dealing in a vacuum. It's just you and the support rep. If your support person's not totally up to speed, you'll suffer. With c.d.i., you're accessing the accumulated experience of both Informix employees and Informix users. You have to filter the wheat from the chaff, but that's life. The real heros here are the Informix folks like Jonathan, June, Dennis, and all the others who began delivering Informix info over the 'Net on their own before it became a "semi-official" part of their jobs. Hopefully, they can take feedback like yours back to their managers and give Informix reasons to do more in this area.
