Tool for documenting an existing informix DB
Posted in 2000
Someone asked for a tool to reverse-engineer and document an existing IDS 7.3 database as an ER diagram, having found Visible Analyst poor with Informix. No single answer, but several recommendations: ERwin (good but pricey), Sybase/PowerDesigner and System Architect (Platinum/CA), Embarcadero ER/Studio (eval available), and InfoModeler (simpler, cheaper, then recently acquired by Visio) for basic table/PK/FK graphics. Posters noted ERwin and ER/Studio give best results only if referential integrity is properly defined. The original poster never reported which he chose.

Hi, does anybody know about a good tool for documenting an existing database running on IDS 7.3 ? It should be able to analyze the database and output an ERD Diagramm. I have checked out Visible Analyst, but it does not work very well with informix. ErWin and Sybase Designer are pretty good. Thomas
I've used ErWin, and it works pretty well as long as your RI is set up well. There is an eval available there too. As others have stated, ERWin is also an excellent product (although pricey) - I'm not sure who markets ERWin these days. Both these products expect Referential Integrity for best results. Regards Mr Creosote -- "Just a waffer thin mint?" Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
i like the simplicity of infomodeler, at least for producing a graphic of the tables, with fk and pk etc. it is not as complete as ERwin, but not as cumbersome either. Is infomodeler a high-end and, therefore, expensive tool? We are looking for a simple tool that can used to graphically represent our database. We don't need all the design power that tools such as ERwin provide but would like to hae access to the documentation components. Where does one find infomodeler? it was recently acquired by Visio. check the website for visio and call 'em. Jake Colman wrote: > Is infomodeler a high-end and, therefore, expensive tool? I have been successful at reverse engineering Informix databases using Power Designer - System Architect from Platinum, now owned by CA. S.
