UPDATE BY NAME I was wondering if anyone else thought that having and update by name function (or insert by name) would be worth while. If enough did could we get Informix to at least consider it as an option. I often have to Insert/Update large tables, sometimes with the fields effected "spread" throughout the record. It is often the case that the THRU operator cannont be efficiently used because of the seperation of the fields in the record. If, when working in 4GL, I could just: DEFINE rec RECORD LIKE big_record . . . UPDATE big_record BY NAME SET rec.field_1, rec.field_10.... this would be much quicker. On the face of it I can't see why it *couldn't* be done. All of the existing restrictions would still apply and things like UPDATE..SET..WHERE should still work.
